Propofol Linked to Hepatitis C Outbreak

The makers of Propofol have been ordered to pay over $500 million in fines and damages. It is alleged that the companies made the vials larger than necessary to eliminate costs and increase profit. Approximately 100 patients were infected, and 20,000 patients were notified about their possible exposure. In addition 73 lots of Propofol and 85 lots of Liposyn that were distributed between July 2009 and October 2009 were recalled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to contamination by particulates which could impede blood flow, causing stroke, kidney failure, and heart attack.

Is Tylenol Cold safe for your child?

New Health Canada Warnings for Children's Cold Medicine

Children under the age of six should never be given cold and cough medications, advised Health Canada on Thursday, after reviewing the effectiveness and potential dangers of the drugs.

Health Canada had previously warned parents about giving the medications to children under the age of two, but it's now expanded the restriction to the age of six, after receiving 124 reports of adverse reactions, 80 of them serious, in children under six from January 1995 to 2008.  Of these, five children under two died, although it hasn't been comfirmed that misuse or overdose was the cause.  Other rare side-effects include convulsions, increased heart rate, and hallucinations.

Ayurvedic medicinal products

Health Canada is reminding consumers who choose to use unapproved Ayurvedic medicinal products that some of these products may contain high levels of heavy metals. Consumption of excessive amounts of heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, pose serious health risks because they may accumulate in vital organs of the body. Children are most susceptible to the toxic effects of heavy metals.

Baxter Heparin Shouldn't Be Used, FDA Warns

Feb 11, 2008 | Parker Waichman Alonso LLP Baxter heparin, implicated in the illnesses of hundreds of people and the deaths of four others, should no longer be used, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned today.   Just prior to the FDA warning, Baxter International had said it would stop manufacturing its multiple-dose vials of injectable heparin following reports of serious allergic reactions in some patients.

Baxter recalled 9 lots of its tainted heparin vials last month, after they were linked to dozens of serious reactions at hospitals and dialysis clinics around the country. Generally, the reactions to the Baxter heparin have occurred within minutes of the drug being administered.  According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) symptoms experienced by victims of the defective heparin included facial swelling, nausea, rapid heart beat and decreased blood pressure. Now it appears that the problems related to Baxter heparin are not confined to the nine recalled lots.
